A winter Ramble

Jeeze it’s so cold. I read someone’s blog here a little while ago…sorry I can’t now remember whose but YOU know who you are sitting with your feet in a bucket of cold water!!! when I read that I shivered so much my teeth rattled. Pleeze if you’re going to shock the populous like that issue a warning first okay LOL.

Actually I haven’t stopped shivering since I brought the towels in this morning, they had been accidentally left out over night and were frozen solid.
“I know,” I thought “I’ll zap them in the dryer,” but by the time I’d put them in they had began to melt so instead I placed them in the washer on spin and then hung them out on the clothes line again!!!

It is a dry day out but so still there may be an earthquake.
To me the earth seems to slow down, the air becomes still and silent just before an earthquake…you can feel it in the air or maybe it's just my imagination

Anyway I hate winter, I miss my UK central heating and the grass remains wet from frost and dew until it’s too dark to mow which pleases hubby but does NOT get the job done. Okay so the grass doesn’t grow much in winter but it still does and our lawn is beginning to look like it needs a good combing

Dad used to say never mow a wet lawn and I for some reason still stick to that though the reason for it eludes me. It’s probably not good for the lawn-mower is all.

I see Bollywood came to NZ to make a movie, good for them.

One of my clients has been moved into a home now so she can receive 24 hour care being too fragile to live alone. I’m sorry to lose 5 hours work/pay but I hope she will will be happy even if she all she wants is not to wake up each morning.
It's so sad but I hope I never get to feel like that, it must be awful and her so devout too.

Why is it jewellery is so expensive to repair. The number of times I’ve had to repair a pair of favourite earrings I could have replaced them three times over now I have a bracelet which needs to go in and pearls which need rethreading I’m dreading the quote for repair.

Yesterday I put on some bacon bones to cook up for Brian (he loves them) lol they were so salty they were almost inedible, remind me to soak the next batch before cooking.

And talking of bacon, why do kiwis prefer it smoked! When we first came back here to live from the UK and asked for the unsmoked bacon we were used to butchers looked at us like we were from Mars.

You just can’t get it readily and probably for this reason kiwis don’t generally know there is any other type of bacon than smoked.

Just once I’d like to be able to buy unsmoked or “fresh” bacon for no other reason than I can and don’t get me started on gammon!!! Oh alright then…just kidding

I never think of NZ as being cold but then again when one thinks of it geographically, how could it not be?

Everything here becomes very still when we are about to experience a hurricane, My husband always says 'hurricane weather' but fortunately we haven't had one here for years - we must be due for one although I have never experienced one, Tobago sometimes gets the tail end. Today we had a storm warning but it was lifted. I don't like winter either and I really don't like the rainy season here. Makes a monsoon look like a shower!

They use wackers here on the lawns so unless the grass is really soggy, I let the gardener at work cut the lawn. It's Savannah grass and if allowed to grow too much you can't get a decent cut and nthen it doesn't spread as it's supposed t

Nothing one can say about Bollywood except it's here already!!

Sorry you have lost one of your clients. Some people when they get to a certain age, don't want to be here anymore. I hope I never get to that stage either.

I have a string of pearls sitting here waiting to be restrung. Plus a lost ruby to be replaced in a ring and a diamond in my mother's engagement ring. I'm frightened of having it done here because I suspect they could put a red stone in and a piece of glass and pass them off as the real thing - charging me an arm and a leg into the bargain!

Hope Brian doesn't have high blood pressure - it will sure as hell have shot up if there was a lot of salt but he'll survive to see another day and mow the lawn!

Know what you mean about the bacon! There's a lot of turkey bacon, turkey hot dogs, turkey 'ham' here because - well don't know why but I guess it's to cater for the Muslim population of which there are many. Either that or it's an American thing because we have quite a bit imported from the US. If I want bacon, I want pork - unsmoked! The only thing I want smoked is salmon!! A lot of smoked ham here too and they've never heard of gammon!

Jewelry repair is one of the reasons I began to do stringing of beads myself. It is a nice hobby and I found I redesigned while I "repaired."

Sitting here in summer I did not want to be reminded of winter. BTW putting your feet in hot water warms you up nicely.

I especially liked what you said about the earth becoming so still before an earthquake. I first noticed this abnormal stillness while living in tornado alley. Sometimes the atmosphere seemed sucked of all sound as much as a day before.

If huge storms and volcanoes and earthquakes are disturbances in the magnetic force of the earth why shouldn't be be able to feel them? If we are attuned to our surroundings.

As to frozen towels. Mom used to just bring them in like so much cordwood and stack on the washer.
